Genus guide
Phoenix — 12 species
Phoenix is a genus of feather palms spanning compact indoor favorites like the Pygmy Date Palm (Phoenix roebelenii) through larger landscape specimens such as the Canary and Cliff Date palms. Most species prefer bright, full-sun to high-light conditions and well-draining soil, watered when the top inch dries out. Toxicity varies across Phoenix species, so verify each species individually against the ASPCA database before placing one in a home with cats or dogs. Note that the sharp spines at the base of the fronds pose a physical hazard to curious pets regardless of chemical toxicity.
