Phalaenopsis — 14 species
Phalaenopsis, or moth orchids, are epiphytic beauties prized for arching sprays of long-lasting blooms in nearly every colour. They thrive in bright, indirect light — an east-facing windowsill or a spot two to three feet from a bright window is ideal — and should be potted in chunky orchid bark that lets roots breathe; water only when aerial roots turn silvery-grey to avoid rot. Phalaenopsis orchids are confirmed non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA, making them one of the safest flowering houseplants for pet owners.
