Parodia14 species

Part of the Cacti family (Cactaceae)

Parodia are compact, globular to columnar South American cacti that make excellent windowsill plants, with species such as Tom Thumb Cactus and Ball Cactus reaching only a few centimetres across. They thrive in bright, direct light for at least five to six hours daily and prefer a soak-and-dry watering regime, with soil allowed to dry completely between waterings. Toxicity is not uniform across the genus — some species, including Parodia magnifica, are reported as mildly toxic to pets. Verify each species individually before placing around cats or dogs.

Parodia — frequently asked questions

Are Parodia plants toxic to cats and dogs?

Most Parodia are pet-safe. Of the 14 Parodia species we cover, 11 are non-toxic on the ASPCA list and 3 carry a toxic or mildly-toxic rating. Even so, confirm the individual species before trusting it around pets.

How much light do Parodia plants need?

Most Parodia do best in bright indirect light. If yours stretches toward the window or loses its variegation it wants more light; scorched or bleached leaves mean it is getting too much direct sun.

Are Parodia easy to care for?

Parodia are moderate to grow: the main requirement is a genuinely bright spot out of harsh midday sun. Get the light right and the rest of their care follows.

How many Parodia varieties are there?

Growli's care library covers 14 Parodia species and varieties — browse them all above. They share a similar light, water and soil pattern, so once you learn one Parodia, the rest follow closely.
