Panicum (switchgrass) is a genus of tall, architectural North American native grasses — cultivars such as Prairie Sky, Shenandoah, Heavy Metal, and Northwind offer season-long interest from airy summer plumes to vivid autumn colour. They grow best in full sun (six-plus hours) and are adaptable to a wide range of soils once established, tolerating both drought and periodic wet conditions. Minimal supplemental watering is needed after the first season. All Panicum species are toxic to cats and dogs and should not be planted in gardens where pets roam unsupervised.
