Paeonia — 10 species

Peonies are long-lived herbaceous perennials prized for their extravagant, fragrant blooms in shades of white, pink, and deep red — species such as Paeonia lactiflora 'Sarah Bernhardt' and P. officinalis (common peony) are garden staples. They demand at least six hours of full sun daily to flower well; tree peonies tolerate dappled shade. Water consistently while establishing, then ease off — peonies hate waterlogged roots and thrive in fertile, well-drained soil. All parts of every Paeonia species are toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA confirmed); keep pets away from flowers, stems, and roots.
