Origanum — 19 species
Origanum is a Mediterranean genus of aromatic herbs and ornamentals in the mint family, encompassing culinary oregano, sweet marjoram, winter marjoram, and decorative forms like the Bellhop Plant. All prefer full sun — at least six hours daily — and sharply drained, slightly alkaline soil. Established plants are drought-tolerant; water only when the top layer of soil feels dry, as overwatering and waterlogged roots are the leading cause of decline. Toxicity varies across the genus: the ASPCA lists oregano and marjoram as toxic to cats and dogs, so check each species before buying if you have pets.
