Opuntia15 species

Part of the Cacti family (Cactaceae)

Opuntia is a large genus of flat-padded prickly pear cacti ranging from the ornamental Bunny Ears Cactus to the sprawling Santa Rita and Plains Prickly Pear. All species demand full, direct sun and extremely well-draining soil, and they are remarkably drought-tolerant — water every two to three weeks in the growing season and cut back to near-zero in winter. Toxicity varies across Opuntia species, so check each one individually before buying if you share your home with cats or dogs; even non-toxic varieties carry barbed glochids that can physically injure curious pets.

Opuntia — frequently asked questions

Are Opuntia plants toxic to cats and dogs?

Most Opuntia are pet-safe. Of the 15 Opuntia species we cover, 11 are non-toxic on the ASPCA list and 4 carry a toxic or mildly-toxic rating. Even so, confirm the individual species before trusting it around pets.

How much light do Opuntia plants need?

Most Opuntia do best in direct sun. If yours stretches toward the window or loses its variegation it wants more light; scorched or bleached leaves mean it is getting too much direct sun.

Are Opuntia easy to care for?

Some Opuntia suit more experienced growers — several want strong light, sharp drainage or a specific seasonal rhythm. Check the individual species page for the exact regime.

How many Opuntia varieties are there?
