Genus guide
Nepenthes — 48 species
Nepenthes are tropical carnivorous climbers and rosette plants from Southeast Asia, producing the iconic pitcher-shaped traps that capture and digest insects. They thrive in bright indirect light with 12 to 14 hours of daily exposure — an east- or west-facing window or grow lights work well indoors. Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse-osmosis water; never tap. Humidity between 60 and 80 percent is ideal, especially for N. rafflesiana and N. veitchii. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Toxicity varies across the genus — always verify the specific species you are buying against ASPCA guidance before keeping it in a pet household.
