Genus guide
Magnolia — 28 species
Magnolia is a large, ancient genus spanning deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs grown for their spectacular goblet or star-shaped flowers. Lily Magnolia (M. liliiflora), Kobus Magnolia, and the rosy-flowered Rustica Rubra all bloom on bare branches in late winter or spring, preferring a sheltered spot in full sun to light dappled shade. Keep soil deep, fertile, and moist but well-drained; young plants need regular watering until established. Pet owners can take comfort: the ASPCA lists Magnolia as non-toxic to cats and dogs.
