Humulus (hops) are vigorous, fast-growing twining vines grown commercially for brewing and ornamentally for their handsome, lobed foliage and papery cone-like strobiles — cultivars include Cascade, Centennial, Fuggle, and Goldings. They demand full sun (at least six hours of direct light daily) and fertile, well-drained soil, with deep, regular watering during the growing season and reduced moisture in winter. Hops are toxic to cats and dogs: ingestion, particularly of the cones, can trigger potentially life-threatening malignant hyperthermia in dogs. Keep all Humulus out of reach of pets.
