Genus guide
Hibiscus — 15 species
Hibiscus is a diverse genus of tropical and temperate flowering shrubs spanning hundreds of species, from the showy Rose of Sharon (H. syriacus) and Swamp Rose Mallow (H. moscheutos) to the popular tropical Chinese hibiscus (H. rosa-sinensis). Most prefer full sun to light shade and consistently moist but well-drained soil; container specimens need frequent watering in warm months. Toxicity varies across the genus: several species, including H. syriacus and H. rosa-sinensis, are listed as non-toxic by the ASPCA, while others remain unassessed, so verify each species before buying for a home with cats or dogs.
