Genus guide
Helianthus — 19 species
Helianthus is a North American genus of roughly 70 annual and perennial species, from the classic Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) to the tuber-forming Jerusalem Artichoke and the prairie-native Maximilian Sunflower. All are sun-lovers — at least six hours of direct light daily is essential for strong stems and full flowering. Water moderately and evenly; established perennial species tolerate short dry spells, while annuals prefer consistent moisture. The good news for pet owners: the ASPCA confirms sunflowers (Helianthus) are non-toxic to cats and dogs.
