Heliamphora — 16 species
Heliamphora, the sun pitcher plants, are ancient carnivorous plants native to the tepui highlands of Venezuela, Guyana, and Brazil. Unlike Sarracenia, their simple, tubular pitchers lack a true lid, relying on bacteria and digestion to process trapped insects. They are cool-growing highland species demanding bright, indirect light for around ten hours a day, consistently wet, nutrient-poor soil using only distilled or rainwater, and cool nights below 65 °F. Toxicity data for Heliamphora is not fully established across the genus; toxicity varies by species, so consult your vet before placing them in a pet-accessible space.
