Gasteria — 14 species
Gasteria is a genus of compact, slow-growing succulents native to South Africa, prized for their stiff, tongue-like leaves often marked with white warts or spots — hence common names like Ox Tongue. Unlike most succulents they tolerate low to moderate indirect light, making them well-suited to shelves and office windowsills. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between sessions, and use a fast-draining cactus mix to prevent root rot. Toxicity varies across species — check each Gasteria before buying if you have pets.
