Festuca is a genus of cool-season ornamental and turf grasses grown worldwide, ranging from the silver-blue mounds of blue fescue (F. glauca) and large blue fescue to meadow-forming Idaho fescue and the fine-textured Maire's fescue. They thrive in full sun with very well-draining soil and need only occasional watering once established, showing excellent drought tolerance. Toxicity varies across the genus — tall fescue (F. arundinacea) poses risks to livestock via fungal endophytes, and safety profiles differ between species — so verify the specific type before purchasing for a pet-sharing household.
