Dionaea — 12 species
Dionaea, the Venus flytrap genus, is a compact carnivorous plant native to the coastal bogs of the Carolinas. Its iconic snap-traps — seen across cultivars such as Sawtooth, Shark Teeth, and Fused Tooth — are specially modified leaves that close on insects within milliseconds. Grow in full sun (at least six direct hours daily) and keep roots permanently sitting in a shallow tray of distilled or rainwater; never let the medium dry out. The ASPCA lists Dionaea muscipula as non-toxic to cats and dogs, making all species in the genus safe for pet households.
