Cryptanthus — 17 species
Cryptanthus, the earth star bromeliads, are compact, rosette-forming plants native to Brazil's forest floors. Unlike most bromeliads they lack a central water-holding cup, absorbing moisture through their roots instead. Species such as the Marble Earth Star and Silver Star Bromeliad display striking banded, striped, or suffused foliage in reds, greens, and silvers — colours that intensify under bright, indirect light. Keep the soil lightly moist and never soggy, watering roughly every five to seven days during the growing season. The ASPCA lists Cryptanthus as non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them a fully pet-safe choice.
