Cosmos — 16 species
Cosmos are fast-growing, feathery-leaved annuals native to Mexico, best known through Cosmos bipinnatus cultivars such as 'Sensation White' and 'Dazzler'. They are undemanding sun lovers that require at least six to eight hours of direct light daily to produce their daisy-like blooms prolifically. One of the few garden annuals that genuinely prefers lean, dry soil — overly rich, moist conditions encourage foliage at the expense of flowers, and established plants rarely need supplemental watering. All Cosmos species are non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA verified), making them a carefree, pollinator-friendly choice for pet-inclusive gardens.
