Chamaecyparis — 19 species
Chamaecyparis, the false cypresses, are elegant coniferous evergreens ranging from towering timber trees like Lawson Cypress and Nootka Cypress to compact bonsai forms such as Hinoki Cypress. They perform best in full sun to partial shade and need consistently moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil — mulching around the base helps retain moisture during dry spells. All Chamaecyparis species are toxic to cats and dogs, so plant them away from areas where pets roam unsupervised.
