Calendula — 9 species
Calendula (pot marigold) is a fast-growing, cool-season annual with vivid orange and yellow daisy-like blooms. It excels in full sun — at least six hours daily — in light, well-drained soil. Water consistently, aiming for roughly one to one-and-a-half inches per week, but allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings as Calendula dislikes waterlogged roots. Cultivars such as 'Radio' and 'Pink Surprise' are reliable cut flowers. According to the ASPCA, Calendula is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a pet-friendly choice for garden borders or container plantings.
