Brugmansia — angel's trumpets — are large shrubs or small trees native to South American Andes slopes, grown for their dramatic pendulous blooms that can reach 12 inches long and release a heady evening fragrance. Common Angel's Trumpet and Ecuador Angel's Trumpet thrive in six to eight hours of direct sun daily. They are thirsty plants: water whenever the top of the soil dries, which may mean daily watering for container specimens in hot weather. All parts of every Brugmansia species are severely toxic to cats and dogs, containing tropane alkaloids that can cause seizures, paralysis, and life-threatening symptoms.
