Genus guide
Antirrhinum — 13 species
Antirrhinum, the snapdragons, are cool-season flowering plants prized for their distinctive hinged blooms in nearly every colour. They thrive in full sun — at least six hours daily — and prefer consistently moist, well-draining soil; they bloom most prolifically in mild spring and autumn temperatures and tend to flag in summer heat. Toxicity varies across the genus, so check the specific species before purchasing for a home with cats or dogs. Several well-known species including Antirrhinum majus are listed as non-toxic by the ASPCA, but not every species has been individually assessed.
