Amelanchier — 15 species
Amelanchier, commonly called serviceberry or Saskatoon berry, is a genus of hardy, multi-season shrubs and small trees — including Saskatoon 'Thiessen', 'Smoky', and Downy Serviceberry — valued for spring blossoms, edible summer berries, and vivid autumn foliage. They grow best in full sun to light shade with moderate, well-drained moisture. Despite producing berries enjoyed by humans and wildlife, Amelanchier is toxic to cats and dogs: leaves, stems, seeds, and unripe fruit all contain cyanogenic glycosides that can cause serious harm to pets.
