Abies — 22 species
Abies, the true firs, is a genus of large evergreen conifers spanning boreal and montane forests across the Northern Hemisphere, including familiar species like Silver Fir, Balsam Fir, White Fir, and Nordmann Fir. In cultivation they demand full sun to light shade, cool temperatures, consistently moist but well-drained acidic soil, and ample space — these are outdoor landscape trees, not houseplants. Fir trees are considered non-toxic to cats and dogs; while needles and oils can cause mild GI irritation if chewed, there is no significant chemical toxicity reported.
