Low's Cymbidium problems — and how to fix them
Low's Cymbidium (Cymbidium lowianum) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Failure to rebloom
The single most common problem. Requires 4-6 weeks of night temperatures of 7-13°C in autumn to initiate spikes; move outdoors in early autumn in temperate regions.
Root rot
Caused by compacted or decomposed compost retaining excess moisture. Repot every 2-3 years and ensure excellent drainage.
Scale insects
Common on pseudobulbs and the underside of leaves. Treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil; check new plants carefully before introducing.
Brown leaf tips
Excess fluoride or chlorine in tap water or direct sun scorch. Use rainwater and ensure only indirect light.
Cymbidium mosaic virus (CymMV)
Streaked or mottled leaves with no cure. Remove infected plants promptly, disinfect cutting tools between plants, and source virus-free stock.
Prevent low's cymbidium problems before they start
Most low's cymbidium issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
